Master's Curriculum

The University of Arkansas offers an M.A. in Sociology with a formal concentration in Rural Sociology. The prerequisites are the same as those for an M.A. in Sociology plus two additional Rural Sociology courses:

  • RSOC 4623, Introduction to Community Development

  • RSOC 500V, Special Problems

A total of thirty-one semester hours of course work or twenty-five hours of course work and six hours of thesis are required for graduation. No more than six hours may be taken outside the Department of Sociology without prior approval by the Graduate Committee. The required sociology courses include:

  • SOCI 5253, Classical Social Theory

  • SOCI 5263, Contemporary Social Theory

  • SOCI 5311L, Applied Data Analysis Lab

  • SOCI 5313, Applied Data Analysis

  • SOCI 5013, Advanced Social Research, OR RSOC 5463, Research Methodology in Social Science, for those enrolled in the rural sociology concentration.

  • SOCI 5083, Methods of Field Research

Additionally, all students are required to pass a comprehensive written examination during their last semester and submit a research paper or thesis for acceptance to the Graduate Committee.

Graduate Assistantships

Rural Sociology has a limited number of assistantships.

The Sociology Department also awards several assistantships to graduate students, including research positions funded through grants, service positions in the computer labs, and several teaching positions in General Sociology courses.
